Croft, William
Typology and Universals - Second Edition
Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 2003. 2nd Edition. orig.boards. 24x15cm, xxv,341 pp.. Minor rubbing. An ink mark to bottom page-edge. VG.
¶ Comparison of the grammars of human languages reveals systematic patterns of variation. Typology and universals research uncovers those patterns to formulate universal constraints on language and seek their exploration. In this essential textbook, William Croft presents a comprehensive introduction to the method and theory used in studying typology and universals. The theoretical issues discussed range from the most fundamental to the most abstract. The book provides students and researchers with extensive examples of language universals in phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics. This second edition has been thoroughly rewritten and updated to reflect advances in typology and universals in the past decade, including: new methodologies such as the semantic map model and questions of syntactic argumentation; discussion of current debates over deeper explanations for specific classes of universals; and comparison of the typological and generative approaches to language" - publisher's description.

Borrobil: A Tale For Children
Jonathon Cape 1944 Hardback, 189pp. On Beltane Eve Donald and Jean decide to visit the dark mysterious wood in top of the hill. And in the wood they meet Borrobil. But Borrobil also describes himself as the best good magician who ever lived in these parts since the rule of King Diarmid. What better guide could Donald and Jean have to lead them to see Morac defeat the poison-breathing Dragon and thence to the north to fetch Princess Finella to be the Morac's bride? But the Black Sulig has first to be overcome and when they eventually reach Finella's castle more dangers threaten from the men of the Long Ships. Donald and Jean return to the wood on the hill just in time to see the fight between the White King and the Black King. DJ; Price clipped.
